چکیده
The global trade in wildlife affects ~24% of terrestrial vertebrates, and demand for traditional medicinal materials, especially Chinese medicine, is a high profile driver. At present the relative extent to which wild-animal-origin materials arises from different markets (OTCM, zhongyi CMP, see companion paper) within "TCM" unknown. We wished populate above categories, revealing numbers types species involved, provide first consolidated description diversity animal potentially able be used facets "TCM”, an overview their conservation status, initial estimate degree existing feeds into these "TCM”. found that number listed as available use differ markedly between Pharmacopoeia People’s Republic China (representing OTCM) - currently lists 70 wild Medical Fauna China, representing 2275 species. Our findings indicated substantial both imports to, exports taxa but not Pharmacopoeia, also there no prior textual support, including being traded substitutes recommend working with TCM practitioners enact targeted substitution sustainably sourced plant-based currently-used animal-origin materials. suggest this should initially target OTCM species, well inferred selected genera likely imported substitutes, strike balance keeping focus required research narrow, while targeting most traded.
